How to improve mental health
While there is a lot of stress on physical health the very mention of mental health is considered inappropriate. Another reason that we ignore mental health is that whereas physical health can be quantified and observed there is no measure for mental health and so we ignore it.
Mental health can be defined as mental and emotional wellbeing. The ability to combat tensions, overcome difficult situations and maintain good relations with others all depends on the state of mental state. Mental health is important throughout life, be it childhood or adulthood. A mentally healthy person can work successfully at their job, contribute positively to society and attain their full potential.
There are a number of ways to improve mental health which require just a few minutes of your time and no money
1. Physical exercise is of as much importance for physical health as it is for mental health. Doing daily exercise releases the hormone endorphin which is known as ‘happy hormone’. This helps to have better mental health. Obesity is a leading cause of low self-esteem and depression which can be controlled with physical exercise.
2. As our lives become more and more hectic we start forgoing sleep. Physical and mental activity creates stress and exhaustion and the body and mind both recover after a good night’s sleep of six to eight hours.
3. Making time for yourself and for your family is one of the best things you can do as it relaxes you mentally. Strong relationships with your family, spouse and children provide a good support system and energise you.
4. Human beings are social animals and interactions with others enlighten us and help to self-improve. Increasing your contribution to community by volunteering to help or partaking in social activities keeps the mind healthy.
5. Make time for indulging in hobbies as this is gives immense pleasure which is relaxing. You also meet other people with similar interests and social interactions are good for mental health. Hobbies draw out your creativity which keeps you happy.
6. Human beings tend to bear the burden of problems and negativity alone out of embarrassment and lack of trust in others ability to help out. Seek help and advice from those close to you and confide in your family and friends as that lightens the burden.
7. Yoga and meditation can also help you to be more relaxed. Even devoting just 15 minutes in the day to yoga and meditation helps you to be better prepared to meet daily work challenges that require good mental health. Meditation allows you to quiet the mind which is lets you focus on the present rather than the hundreds of things flashing through your mind.
Despite all these efforts, if there is no solution to mental anguish then consult a mental health practitioner. Tension and stress and related problems have become common place and going to a psychiatrist is no longer considered a social stigma. Moreover good, experienced doctors can help you regain your mental health quickly.
